which model is right for me?
which model is right for me?
For some, this is a tough question. This information should help make the decision easier.
Our goal with this website is to present you with the information that you’ll need to make a good digital piano buying decision. While we offer lots of specifications and opinions it is not our goal or desire to lead you towards any specific model. We trust that armed with enough pertinent information that you are perfectly capable of arriving at a sound decision that is right for you. With that in mind, there are some key elements in your decision making process that will largely determine which instrument you will ultimately buy. Let me suggest that you begin by answering some key questions.
Who will be playing the instrument?
This is an important question because while new players can enjoy almost any level of instrument, advanced players will not likely enjoy lower priced, entry level digital pianos. Perhaps more then one person will be playing the instrument. Basically, the quality of the instrument should match or exceed (for future growth) the best player who will be using the instrument. Determining such a match will likely require the proposed player actually try some instruments to decide which ones are acceptable to them. However, it is likely that advanced players will not favor many entry level instruments. In the end, your preferences, desires and opinions will dictate which models fit with you.
What features, if any, might I want?
With todays technology an almost endless list of features are available on many digital pianos. The question is, which features are you interested in? Many people simply want a great feeling keyboard and a great sounding piano sound. Others want hundreds of sounds, accompaniment and elaborate recording capabilities. Beyond sounding and feeling like a piano many of you may not even know what the various features are and what their benefits may be. If you find yourself wondering about all of the various features available I would urge you to review the feature chart page to familiarize yourself with some of the more common features. As well, I would urge you to contact us or another digital piano expert to discuss and clarify what features may or may not be available and how they might benefit you.
What about the size and appearance?
Digital pianos come in sizes ranging from very small, light and portable to quite large and heavy. Their appearance can range from a stage keyboard type instrument right on up to an eloquent baby grand style instrument. Some people may be hoping to squeeze their digital piano into a child’s bedroom while others may be hoping to feature their instrument in a room of it’s own. So, depending on your desires and applications, the size and appearance of your new digital piano must be considered.
What’s your budget?
Way back, before the advent of the digital piano, people didn’t have much choice, they had to buy an acoustic piano and at that time most pianos were very good quality. While this didn’t offer much choice to the consumer, it did somewhat ensure that they didn’t “cheap out” and buy the wrong instrument, it was essentially impossible to under purchase. On the other hand, the relatively high price of pianos at that time excluded many people as they simply couldn’t afford an acoustic piano.
Now, with digital pianos ranging in price from less then $1000 to almost $20,000 there are many choices. How much you should spend on a digital piano is completely your business. We would only offer this opinion. If you can afford it, you should buy whichever piano suits you best regardless of the price, so long as you are getting what you want and need at a fair market price. On the other hand, if you have a specific limit on what you feel comfortable spending you must try to find an instrument within that price range. We would much rather see you get started playing on a less expensive instrument then not at all. Alternatively, you could delay your purchase to allow you time to accumulate more funds or consider some responsible financing options.
While budget is strong consideration, we strongly suggest that you do your best to not make it the centre of your decision. While we wouldn’t want you to spend irresponsibly, we’d hate to see you save a bit of money at the expense of your long term satisfaction with the instrument you purchase.
Sum it up!
With answers to those four questions you won’t have finalized your model decision but you will have definitely eliminated many models which is a good start. Hopefully, you should be left with a handful of contending models based on your needs, wants and budget. Now, all that is left is for you to physically try them or have them demonstrated for you. This final audition should determine which of your finalists is acceptable to you at the lowest cost of the group.
That’s the one you should buy...
